New Blog!

New blog I'm in love with!
Rookie Moms

The site has a wealth of great activities to do with your kid and family AND they don't seem too gender specific. This is 'cause some of the books I've seen at the store are tailored straight for Stay-at-home-Moms and neglect the dads. I know Tam's only 4.5 months and I'm already lookin' for cool things to do with him and for him to experience.

I'm totally going to use Tam as a billboard this weekend :-) Don't tell Brian!
I'll keep you all posted about the activities we try.

Remember building forts?

I remember when I was a kiddo building forts in the house out of the dining room table, chairs, seat cushions, and sheets. It was so cool to be in this "little" house that seemed to be its own world. I remember having dad or mom crawling into the fort just barely to read stories or partake in our tea parties. Hours of fun...days if mom let us keep the fort up that long. And NO electronics necessary :-)

With that in mind, I was cruising the web and stumbled onto a blog mentioning the Fortamajig.
Fort building brought into the 21st century, yet still no electronics! Basically it is a big piece of canvas with velcro loops all around the perimeter and several towards the center. This allows the builder to attach the canvas to various support structures. Great because this means no more collapsing forts when the blanket slips off the chair. It is very much like a portable tent without the poles :-) Oh, I can already so see this being used by us indoors and outside. I'll put it on the wish list for when Tam's a little older :-) Can't you already picture Tam and Brian under a blue canvas telling Dungens and Dragons stories with their little figurines :-)

Over-tired baby!

We found out this past weekend what happens to Tam when he doesn't get his afternoon nap and then goes to bed too late. Yep, this is a recipe for disaster!

The day itself was rather busy with me taking Brian to work, than going into the school with Tam, then getting Brian from work, then going to a friend's choir concert, then going to other friends' house for dinner. Our poor little guy was bundled up and down and placed into/out of the car seat so many times that day. He did get a bit of a nap at the concert, but woke and started "talking" during the Copland piece. (It was a lesser known Copland and quite modern (not very likable)). When we went over for dinner, our friends have a boy who is about 1.5 years old. Tam couldn't stop watching this live entertainment! He thought Zander was awesome as he played around the room. We thought it was great to see how big Tam might be in another year :-)

Well, mom and dad lost track of time and before we knew it it was already nearly 8 o'clock. Tam had not forgotten what time it was and began to scream his little head off. Normally, he's a happy camper with cries only for food, dirty diaper, and gas. Now we can add the "I'm-over-tired-and- nothing-will-make-me-happy-at-this-point-except-sleep" cry which was complete with tears and hand punches. These cries are now nothing like the little mews he made when he was first born. Now, they are loud enough you can't talk over them or ignore them! And, once we got him home, he was so worked up he couldn't go to sleep! URGH! Finally Brian just snuggled with him in out bed, murmuring songs, and letting him cry. A good 45minutes later it was finally quiet. I checked on them and BOTH boys had finally drifted off to dream land.

Note to self...Tam=happy when he's gotten his rest. (Duh).

Peep Experiments

For those of us who enjoy science research AND these disgusting marshmallow goo animals, this is a must visit website:

I particularly liked the medical miracle & the risk analysis studies!

Silly jokes

After a discussion with my colleages about favorite silly kid-friendly jokes.

Q: Why was the number six so afraid of seven?
A: Because seven eight(ate) nine.

Q: What did the zero say to the eight?
A: Nice belt.

Q: Why can’t skeletons play music in church?
A: Because they have no organs.

Q: What do John the Baptist & Winnie the Pooh have in common?
A: Their middle name.

Q: What is the last thing that goes through a bug's mind as it hits a windshield?
A: His butt.

Two ropes walk into a bar. The bartender says to the rope "Hey! we don't serve ropes in here" so one of the ropes left. The other rope frayed up his hair and tied himself in a knot. The bartender said to the rope "Are you a rope?" and the rope said " I'm afraid not"

Introducing solids

Just this week we've added solids to our little one's diet. We started with the baby cereal (brown rice and oats). We first asked our pediatrician for ideas or book recommendations for when to start food and what, but he pretty much said go with our guts! He said all the information out there is pretty contradictory, but most people start with cereal then fruits then veggies. He suggested starting cereal around 4-5 month because of our little one's size. I was waiting until he seemed really interested in eating 'cause he was mesmerized with watching us stuff our faces :-)

So solids...and a squirmy Tam who wasn't really sure what to do with the food at first. The initial scoops of soupy cereal ended up more on his chin then in his tummy. This was mostly 'cause he still has some of the tongue reflex left for pushing things out of his mouth to prevent choking. Plus he made some great faces getting used to the new texture!

Currently Tam's still eating mostly boob juice (about 6 feedings) and then a half cup of cereal mush too for dinner. We've also added formula too 'cause my milk supply can't keep up with his hungry belly. Oh what a goober.

Whoa...So life got busy!

Life with a little one and teaching and 3-year review has gotten busy! However, I think I have most things back under control for now and should be able to update this blog to bring everyone back to speed and get my thoughts out of my head.

What's gone down in brief:

1) Traveled East to see family for a week in March
2) Tam went in for his 4 month check up
3) I submitted my documents for my third year review
4) Tam's first try at solid foods
5) Enjoying the warmer weather finally
6) Advising my 29 students for next terms classes
7) Tam's bathing in the full size bath tub
8) Brian has re-done the downstairs bathroom

And of course, there has been tons of photos as well! Hmmm...Start at the present and work back? Or start blogging on topics furthest back in time first? Well, here's a most recent photo of Tam to appease the masses ...
