#2 What we didn't know before baby

We are definitely learning that with a young baby all you tend to think about is the baby's sleeping,  eating, and pooping habits.  What did we discuss before?  

I learned last week that what the mom eats a ton of . . . the baby is also eating via the momma milk.  Yeah, as a scientist I knew this, but a particular episode brought the idea home.  I did a little last minute Christmas shopping on Monday last week.  While in line, I had the impulse to buy a big bag of cherry twizzlers.  Oh I know they are pure sugar and plastic, but taste so good when you have a craving for them.  Well, once home, I did share the twizzlers with Brian, but pretty much finished the entire bag of them in the next 24hours.  And they were very good.   Now a breast-fed baby's poo is yellowish because of the milk he's getting.  As parents, we aren't to freak out until it is red or black (for blood).  After my plastic-sugar goodness eating binge, lo - and -behold, Tam's poo was an amazing shade of grass green.  What?!  Yep...too much sugar in the milk from mom.  Don't worry, it went back to normal after 2 diapers.  I can't say I won't eat twizzlers again but I will try to control myself and not gobble them all at once!  Sheesh.

#1 : What we didn't know before baby

I've decided to keep a running log of all the new things we are learning about being parents of this wee little bundle of squirminess.  This way, we can look back on the list and laugh and laugh!  And here I thought I already knew everything in the world!

Our first tidbit has to be learning how NOISY babies sleep at times!  Our Tam is a grunter . . . like a little pig or a gassy old man.  Grunt, grunt, snort, snort, grunt, fart... sheesh.   I didn't think breastmilk would give a baby so much gas for burps and farts.  He might have reached the end of sleeping in the pack-n-play in our room because of all the noise he makes between 2 and 4am.  He eats around 10ish, wakes & eats around 2ish, grunts for couple of hours, wakes and eats around 4-5ish and may be done with the night.  My mom-sense hears all the noise and can't sleep.  So into to the crib in the nursery might be his fate.  

Then at other times, he sleeps like a quiet sake of potatoes. 

Caroling at Meijer Gardens

Oh Christmas is almost here and I am by far not ready for the holiday!  We at least have the tree up and Brian put up the village so the house is festive.  And we have a good 4-6 inches of snow on the ground so we may just get that White Christmas here.  Brian has been in the holiday spirit by singing with the local Dicken's Caroling group.  This is a small group that sings as a quartet at local events (for money).  Most of their songs are from the Victorian era...but there are some more current favorites in there as well such as Rudolf :-)

On Tuesday, Tam and I bundled up and went to Meijer Gardens to hear Brian singing.  At this time of year, the gardens have around 50 Christmas trees decorated for the season.  Each tree represents a different culture's Christmas traditions.  Some of them are pretty unique...I really liked walking through the tropical room and seeing the banana tree trimmed in colored lights.  Tam stayed awake for part of the evening then conked out. It was a great evening...if it the place was pretty packed with people with the same idea. Photos of our night out are linked on the right.

Oh...and the latest news is that Tam just discovered his hands :-)  I don't think he has figured out that they are his appendages, but he has been able to stuff them in his mouth.  Too cute.

Scott & Jennifer's Baby Boy

We just heard the news of another pair of friends having their baby.  Scott Krankowski (friend from college) and his wife Jennifer just had their first baby. . . a boy name Aaron Matthew (not sure of spelling).  He joined this world on this past Monday and beat Tamlin for weight.  The little tyke weighed in at 9lbs 8oz!  Congratulations to our friends and we wish them the best of luck on this fun new adventure!
